I took a few of my miscellaneous ramblings and committed them to CD. And worse yet, I'm handing them out to people. I'm not yet convinced they're listening, but they are out there. And most likely, if you're reading this, you have one. And I promised more information, so here it is, I hope it makes sense to you. Essentially, this whole thing was started as an experiment to see if my new computer did everything it was supposed to do, and it just got out of hand. I have tapes of things I've recorded over the past 15 years or so, and I had dumped them all into my PC. I started doing some rough mixes, and thought it would be fun to burn a couple of them to CD. Well, then I thought that six minutes of music was just not enough to warrant using up a whole 50 cent CD, so I roughly mixed a few more down, and got it up to the 20 or so minutes of embarrassment you now have before you. Porchlight was written on guitar about 1984, back when I was playing with Silhouette, and the first section was recorded back then. I always knew the second section was going to exist, and it was going to be a keyboard part, but I never got around to recording it until the version that you hear now was put to tape, in roughly 1994. I attempted to show it to Brad once when we managed to get together and jam, and there is an awful recording of us running through it about 20 times. It's not very pretty. Anyway, I'm sure there's more coming on this song, so stick around. Between 6 and 1 is a nice little tune I've been working on for a number of years, and this is as far as its gotten. It plans to have a lot more added to it as far as instrumentation, but the basic structure of the song should stay as it is. Extra credit if you can figure out what I'm referencing in the title... Birthday Suite is not really a suite at all, but I didn't really want to call it Birthday Suit, and I felt this was the next best thing. Again, unfinished, but I think the arrangement is in place, though who can tell? I had the song written for about a year when the drums were recorded (at a surprise birthday party, hence the name). This was Bob's second take, after never hearing the song before. We were all a bit amazed, as I hope you are. The laugh in the beginning of the song is courtesy of Joe Cardenas, if you were wondering. Would you believe... I actually got Brad to record something with me? I'd only been trying for about 6 years. I think we actually recorded 3 or 4 songs that day, but this is the only one I could get printed to the CD. Bathtub Memories is a song I wrote a long time ago, and the only thing I remember about writing it is recording it once on a cheap portable tape recorder that was precariously perched on the edge of a bathtub. You've maybe heard that the acoustics in a bathroom are often conducive to good guitar recordings? It's a lie, trust me. My friend Keith works for SGA, a staging company, and asked to borrow an excerpt of some of my music to use in a two minute segment of a promotional video they were putting together. I chose instead to write something new for them. Unfortunately, the video was never produced, or maybe it was and I never knew about it. Anyway, this is the result. Notice to the critics out there (you know who you are): Please keep in mind that none of this is 'final edition' stuff at all. The drums were recorded with one cheap microphone, very little of it was actually rehearsed, and the mixes are VERY rough. Really, the only reason I'm handing this out at all as to get you people ("When are you going to make me a CD?") off my back! So if the bass is too loud, or the snare drum isn't bright enough, or lead guitar is a bit out of tune in that one spot, DEAL WITH IT! And, hopefully, enjoy.
